Two Little DIckie Birds

Wow! These Two Little Dickie Birds are over 200 years old!

 We love being intrepid woodland explorers in our Down in the Woods theme.

Did you know that one of our favourite rhymes in this theme is over 200 years old?!

Yes, "Two Little Dickie Birds", enjoyed by many generations, was first published in Mother Goose's Melody or Sonnets for the Cradle (London 1780).

In this version the names of the birds were Jack and Gill (hmm...seem familiar?!):

There were two blackbirds
Sat upon a hill,
The one was nam'd Jack,
The other nam'd Gill;
Fly away Jack,
Fly away Gill,
Come again Jack,
Come again Gill.

In the modern version our dickie birds are called Peter and Paul, it seems the names of two of Jesus' disciples replaced the original Jack and Gill in the 19th century.
